How to relieve swelling in hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a disease that is oftenproceeds secretly and becomes noticeable after complications have been added. This is explained by the fact that the disease is more common in elderly women who rarely undergo a complete examination. Diet in hypothyroidism can somewhat alleviate the condition of patients. Hypothyroidism or myxedema occurs with a decrease in the thyroid gland. It is known that the thyroid hormones contribute to an increase in energy metabolism, and as they become few, other types of metabolism are also violated (biochemical processes can not proceed without energy), which in turn leads to disruption of the internal organs.
Hypothyroidism can be primary and secondary. Primary hypothyroidism occurs with congenital abnormalities of the thyroid gland, inflammatory processes, operations on it and so on. With secondary hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland itself is not changed, the pathological process is in other parts of the endocrine system that affect the functioning of the thyroid gland (for example, a tumor or trauma to the pituitary or hypothalamus).
Signs of hypothyroidism - increasing lethargy, fatigue, memory impairment, drowsiness, swelling, dry skin, constipation. The appearance of a person changes: the face becomes more rounded, puffy, especially the lower eyelids swell, the lips acquire a cyanotic shade, the cheeks - pinkish-bluish. Skin cold, dry, rough, strongly flaky. Edema of the neck can lead to shortness of breath, hoarseness of voice, nasal congestion, hearing loss. The hair on the head and on the body drop out. The functions of all organs decrease: the number of heartbeats decreases, the secretion of the glands of the gastrointestinal tract, the gonads, brain activity decreases (memory and intellect decrease), the production of erythrocytes and hemoglobin (iron deficiency anemia) decreases, obesity appears.
If patients do not receive adequate treatment, thenthe disease can be complicated by a hypothyroid coma: there is confusion, sometimes - convulsions, then comes a loss of consciousness and death.
Basic principles of diet for hypothyroidism
Therapeutic diet for hypothyroidism is based onthe principle of reducing the energy value of a daily diet (the amount of easily digestible carbohydrates and fats is limited) and stimulation of metabolic processes in the body (the volume of protein foods, the amount of vitamins and minerals increases).
The energy value of a daily setproducts is reduced mainly due to carbohydrates and to a lesser extent fat. Limit primarily easily digestible carbohydrates (all sweet, buttery, floury) and foods rich in cholesterol (animal fats, fatty meats, fish, brains, fish eggs, offal, butter, sour cream, etc.).
At the same time, the volume of productswhose composition includes complex carbohydrates, especially those rich in fiber. These are vegetables, fruits, berries, cereals (especially buckwheat). Complex carbohydrates are absorbed slowly and are a constant, long-lasting source of energy. Vegetable fiber is not split at all in the intestine, it promotes food through the intestines and clears it of stagnation and fecal stones.
Fats restrict only animals, vegetable fats (especially olive oil) contribute to lowering cholesterol in the blood.
In the diet of patients with hypothyroidism should behigh content of protein foods (lean meat, fish, cottage cheese, sour-milk products, cheese), vitamins and mineral salts. All these components accelerate the metabolic processes. Fermented milk products also contribute to reducing constipation, which is very typical for patients with hypothyroidism. To relax the stool, they are also prescribed dried fruits (dried apricots, dates, figs, prunes), which swell in the intestines and promote the movement of stool. Freshly squeezed beet juice will also help, which can be mixed with carrot and apple juice (pure beet juice can irritate the gastrointestinal tract).
Since patients with hypothyroidism have severe swelling, it is recommended to limit the intake of table salt and liquid.
In the fight against constipation, in addition to enriching the diet with vegetable fiber, one-day lactic acid products (kefir, yogurt), prunes, beet juice, rye bread are indicated.
Features of the diet for complications of hypothyroidism with obesity
The course of hypothyroidism is often complicated by obesity. In such cases, diet No. 8 is prescribed, which has a lower energy value (1800 kcal). In a hospital with a severe degree of obesity, the energy value can be further reduced (up to 1200-600 kcal). A feature of this diet is the normal protein content. Low-fat varieties of meat, fish, cottage cheese, kefir, buckwheat porridge, vegetables, unsweetened varieties of fruit are recommended.
The main treatment for hypothyroidism is replacement therapy with thyroid hormones. Nevertheless, compliance with the diet can significantly alleviate the condition of such patients.
