Swelling of the pharynx
Causes of laryngeal edema
Laryngeal edema - pathological process, developing in the field oflarynx and manifested in the narrowing of its lumen. Laryngeal edema is not an independent disease, but rather indicates the presence of a wider disease in the body. Edema can be inflammatory or non-inflammatory. More susceptible to this pathology of young men, nevertheless, it occurs in the elderly, and in children. Causes of laryngeal edema are different, among them:
- the effect of radiological irradiation, radiation or radiotherapy aimed at the neck area;
- the consequence of surgical interventions in the neck and larynx, prolonged intubation of the larynx;
- traumas of the larynx of different nature;
- purulent-inflammatory processes in the pharynx, cervical region, okolgolotochnom space, perichondrium and cartilage of the larynx, the root of the tongue, palatine tonsils and soft tissues of the bottom of the oral cavity;
- acute (eg, influenza, measles, typhoid, scarlet fever, etc.) or chronic (for example, syphilis, tuberculosis) infectious diseases;
- allergic reactions of different origin;
- heart and vascular disease, kidney and liver.
Edema develops on the basis of loose fiber undermucous membrane (on the surface of the epiglottis, in the folds of the larynx or at the entrance to it). Swelling of the larynx of an allergic nature is often accompanied by edema of the face and neck (eg, Quincke's edema).
The narrowing of the larynx lumen is usually accompanied bypain in the throat, sensation of a foreign body in the throat, hoarseness of the voice, a hard and noisy breathing, against which the choking threatening the life of the patient may develop.
Laryngeal edema is a condition requiring professional treatment and the most rapid reaction to its onset.
How to treat the larynx edema?
Treatment of laryngeal edema can be conservative or surgical, the choice of which remains with the attending physician.
Relevant in this case, medicamentousdrugs are represented by broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticosteroids, antihistamines and diuretics. The choice of the drug is based on the nature of the edema. If it is the presence of a bacterial infection and, consequently, inflammation, the treatment consists in antibiotic therapy. If the swelling is a consequence of an allergic reaction, then the drugs of choice are antihistamines.
Absence of effect with adequately assignedmedicamental treatment is the reason for increasing the dosage of drugs. The absence of visible improvements and in this case is an indication for surgical intervention.
Surgical treatment consists of tracheotomy - an operation in which the throat is excised, a cannula is inserted into the resulting mouth, which ensures a normal breathing process.
During the entire treatment, the patient is contraindicated in abundant fluid intake and overstrain of the vocal cords.
What diseases can be associated with
