What is edema? According to the scientific definition, this is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the tissues. The human body is 70% water. About 2/3 of it is inside the cells, and 1/3 - in the intercellular space. The increase in the volume of fluid in the intercellular space, in fact, is the edema.

There are local and general edema. The first is attached to a particular organ or site of the vascular bed. It happens, for example, with diseases of the lymphatic vessels or veins of the lower extremities, allergic edema of the face. General swelling is accompanied by swelling of the tissues throughout the body and is characteristic of diseases of the heart, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract. General swelling becomes noticeable with the accumulation of three or more liters of fluid in the body, most often as a result of kidney failure of salt and water.

In either case, swelling signals thatyou are going through some kind of pathological process and it's time to pay attention to it. There are many reasons why there is swelling. We will consider some of them, the most common ones.

One of the causes of edema isincreased pressure in the thinnest blood vessels - capillaries. Another reason is associated with a decrease in the content of proteins in the blood plasma, especially albumins. This leads to a decrease in osmotic pressure and the release of fluid from the bloodstream into the tissue. The formation of edema is also caused by an increase in the permeability of capillaries, which develops as a result of their toxic damage or inflammation. The treatment of these ailments should be addressed to a physician-therapist.

Edema inevitably accompanies inflammatorydiseases of the veins on the legs: phlebitis or thrombophlebitis. At the same time, the leg reddens and hurts both at rest and when touched. If you have swollen legs regularly. but do not blush, this indicates the development of varicose veins. Venous edema is soft to the touch, the skin is warm when touched, sometimes with a bluish tinge.

Fortunately, the legs can swell and "just like that" - fromheat and fatigue. But in this case, the swelling is irregular: it is worth to lie down with your feet up, pamper your feet with warm baths - the swelling passes and does not return.

Remember that the edema itself is notdisease. It can only be an important symptom that indicates the presence of a particular ailment. Therefore, with the regular occurrence of swelling should always consult with a specialist.

So with regular appearance of swelling around the eyes, consult a doctor and he will prescribe the necessary tests.

It is necessary to be more often in the fresh air and move more. Edema is a stagnant phenomenon, and the better the "dispersed" all exchange systems, the less edema.

It is not recommended to wear shoes at too high heels, so as not to provoke swelling on the legs.
