The syndrome of the inferior vena cava usually manifests itself in a rapidly increasing swelling of the face and upper body, dyspnoea and stridor, which increase in the supine position.
Syndrome of the superior vena cava accompanied by swelling of the cervical veins and the appearance of a pronounced venous pattern on the chest and abdomen.
Almost always the syndrome develops against a background of malignant neoplasms, usually lung cancer or lymphoma.
